Online English Teaching

Teaching English online has really taken off in the past few years, and it is now possible to earn up to £20 per hour from the comfort of your own home. However, because many of the larger companies only employ North American native English speakers, it can be difficult to find the right company to work for. Below we look at 3 of the best options that are open to UK residents.

1. DaDaABC

DaDaABC is one of the biggest and most professional companies connecting online English teachers to Chinese children who are studying English. Although their interview process is quite rigorous, if you are successful you can work 3-20 hours per week for up to £20 per hour, which is one of the best deals at the moment.

Job Requirements

  • Speak English at an idiomatic level (neutral accent)
  • Hold a BA degree or above
  • Teaching certification is required (such as TESOL/TEFL/CELTA/PGCE etc.)
  • Stable and strong internet connection
  • At least 1 year teaching experience

  • Well structured learning materials provided
  • Well paid relative to other companies
  • Flexibility in your schedule

  • Recruitment process is not the easiest – even if you meet all the job requirements you will still need to do your research and read the interview preparation pack thoroughly before your online interview
  • Students are aged from 4-16, so no adult lessons available

2. Italki

Italki is an online marketplace which connects online teachers with interested students – of all languages. You set your own rate of pay and choose when and who you want to teach. However, there are many other teachers, so it may be difficult to attract students at first. If you are not yet qualified as an EFL teacher you can sign up to become a ‘community tutor’ which is generally for less pay, but the lessons will be more conversational.

You can read more about the company from a student’s perspective in our Italki Review.

Job Requirements

  • Native (or native level) speaker
  • TEFL qualified for the higher paid jobs
  • Skype or Zoom account

  • Access to a huge amount of interested students of all backgrounds
  • Set your own pay rate, schedule, and preferred students
  • Access to cheap online lessons if you are learning a foreign language

  • It is up to you to create an interesting profile which attracts students

3. Cambly

Cambly focuses on helping adults learn English by providing them with connections to native English speakers so they can have conversations instantly. No teaching experience is required and it is a very laid back role – as long as you are happy chatting away to an English learner who could be from anywhere around the world, and getting paid for it!

Job Requirements

  • Native (or native level) English speaker
  • Set up a profile and introduction video on the Cambly site

  • Get matched instantly with English learners, whenever you have free time to chat
  • Adult learners who can usually already have a basic conversation
  • No need to lesson plan or teach a full lesson, conversation is enough

  • Pay is less than the others at £7.80 per hour
